I've been reading all the discussion about the coach knowingly risking a suspension for not meeting MPR, (a lot on other forums). A number of people came out against MPR even in the regular season, (though some of them are not in LL).

I wonder how many leagues don't use continuous batter order?
I don't know of any around here, nor do I think any league around here would get away with it, but anyone know of leagues that don't use CBO for all divisions?

Most of the leagues in our District do not use CBO in majors and above.
A couple of leagues do use it in majors but none use it above that.

Of course, everyone uses it in Tee-Ball and Minors (as required by LL Rules/Regs).

Wow, how can you get a way with not using CBO in Majors and above?
Those borderline bench kids would all quit after a week around here.
How do you retain them?

Regular Season MPR is one at-bat and six defensive outs.
That's the Minimum, that doesn't mean the player can't play more.
Many (most?) managers tend to give kids more than MPR over time.

So, let's look at CBO.
Say you have 12 players.
The #10, 11 and 12 batters obviously bat at least once, most likely twice every game.
So, players are going to quit after a week because they didn't get to bat twice each game?

Don't get me wrong, I actually like CBO because to me it keeps kids "in the game" but I don't see kids not signing up or quitting if a league doesn't use it.

Look at the flip side, do the better players (the studs) quit because they are "losing" at-bats?

As a compromise, we divide our Majors season into two unofficial phases.

In "Phase 1", basically a round-robin seeding portion of the schedule, we use CBO and a 3 inning max per pitcher.

In "Phase II", usually last third of the season and basically a playoff schedule, we bat 9, CBO not allowed, and restrict pitchers only on pitch count.

This is explained to players and families from registrations and tryouts and throughout the season.

CBO is used on all levels here... though I don't agree with it in Seniors.

Ironically, CBO has dumbed-down many coaches so much that they forget how to sub when it comes to tourney time.

We use CBO in our District for all levels.
The coaches like it better because substitution is easier.

Yeah I agree, my kid played one spring in Seniors and I couldn't believe that they used CBO

I wouldn't use it in Juniors either

HS is 9 (or 10 if they choose the EH)

Travel tournaments use 9 (or 10)

some teams use CBO in travel (although my son's team doesn't)

Why not use CBO in Juniors or Seniors?

For me, I was thinking that they don't use CBO in JV or Varsity which is where most of these kids want to play and at some point you have to get use to batting 9 and true substitutions.
I've just never really liked this CBO thing at any level say past coach pitch/machine pitch.

There are too many instances where kids get 1 AB or 2 AB's a game and no one benefits from that.
Kids leave if they are not getting enough AB's plain and simple

Most of our Juniors/ Seniors kids aren't playing any school ball plus free substitutions is 1000 times better so that alone makes CBO worth it.

I've never coached minors but would have liked to have CBO optional in majors from game to game, wouldn't matter if the other team was using it or not. So instead of league option it should be manager option IMO.

Interesting

Well over half of our Seniors played HS ball at one of the three HS in our town

No way CBO could be a manager option!
Can you imagine the parent complaints/problems if one team used CBO and the other didn't?

I thought of that before I posted.....I know there was a guy online around here who would always say "DONT LET THE INMATES RUN THE ASYLUM!"....When I'm playing an in house game and I'm 5-0 aginst the team on the year and I have a 13 player roster, eight kids will sit the bench in the game no matter what....It would be nice to just sit back and not worry about playing time.

Maybe a manager(s) option, if both teams agree before the start of the game?

If I could use CBO I would probably sit every kid an inning or two....I'm not arguing for it, if I wanted CBO I would have pushed for it in my local league years ago, there's just games where it would be nice.

Yeah most of our Juniors kids don't play middle school ball and maybe just a handful play high school ball.
We don't keep standings at any level so with CBO it works great because it's more about getting everyone playing time as opposed to just winning.

You don't keep standings at any level - WOW.
Never heard that one before.

No way that would work around here but if it works for you that's what matters.
