We had our Affidavit check tonight and one of the ADAs had an interesting story and asked the UIC and a couple other umps in the room about a play over the weekend.

Juniors Softball: Runner on first is on a straight steal of second. Left on release, very fast. Catcher jumps out of her crouch early anticipating needing to throw. She missed the pitch entirely and the ball goes to the backstop and takes a weird Charom off the fence and come all the way out to the third baseman who was playing in.

Meanwhile the runner, who reaches second base easily thinks its a foul ball and after taking a turn re-touches 2nd base and is trotting back to first. Then third seeing this rifles a ball toward first. Ball sails into the stands (deadball area).

The question came up what base to award the runner?

Two bases, runner gets third, 7.05(g)

By the way, why wasn't the base coach yelling at the runner to go back to second?

Two bases from the runner's physical position at the time the throw was released.
